5. Matiu/Somes Island

January 5

This is a protected Island but you don't need permits - just jump on the ferry at Queens Wharf or Days Bay. We had bought tickets off grab-one so it only cost about $70 for the 7 of us.

Once you get there you have to report to the visitors hut and you get a bit of a talk about what you can and can't do on the island. It is actually worth staying and listening to a bit of the history (I did on a previous visit) but we had mister 5 with us who was not keen on sitting still.

We headed up the hill towards the education centre and had a picnic. It was very gusty up the top and the wind turbine was going full speed. We then headed into the Quarantine Centre and then up to the lookout. There were gun emplacements which the kids found interesting and there were a couple of black gull chicks hiding in one. Tried to get to the edge of the lookout but the gulls were being very protective so we gave it a miss.

Next we got back onto the loop track and just followed it around with a short detour to the lighthouse.

Fairly easy walk with the steepest part being the initial climb up to the education centre. Awesome views of the harbour.

About 8 000 steps.
